While living in southern Japan for a number of years, one of our favorite places to visit was Miyajima, an island approximately 20km south of Hiroshima. After a short ferry ride from the mainland, you are deposited onto another world where historical beauty is at every turn. This waterfall begins near the highest point of the island called Mount Misen, accessible via three hiking trail systems that will leave even the most athletic folks breathless, or a ropeway which will carry you up for a small fee. There were many beautiful places to photograph the falls as we hiked down one of the three trails. As we reached the end of the trails, this location caught my eye as it sits below a local resident neighborhood. As I framed the scene I imagined living in one of the few homes above, blessed with the constant hum of cascading waterfalls. Towards the end of the afternoon, tourists were few, and I was able to walk away with an image that instantly takes me back to that peaceful day.
